Answer
No, the foundation cannot accept applications from organizations with a fiscal sponsor or whose tax-exempt status is pending. Organizations applying for a grant must have received an IRS determination letter.

No, individual members of the Board of Directors initiate discretionary awards. We do not accept unsolicited proposals for discretionary awards. Discretionary awards are subject to approval by the Board and are not renewable.

If a deadline falls on a weekend, the deadline is extended to the following Monday at 5pm.

The environmental grant cycle used to be called Environment/Preservation cycle.
The cycle is open to organizations whose mission and programs relate to the preservation of the history of New York City, parks, gardens, and environmental education.Environmental grants are accepted and awarded during our spring cycle. The application opens on March 15 and closes April 15. In May, all applicants are contacted. Final decision is made in July.

Yes.
At the end of 2017, we made changes to our guidelines by eliminating the education category. Organizations can still apply for education programs under one of the other categories (human services, arts or environmental) based on the organization’s mission and program content.

The foundation requires only organizations receiving multi-year grants to submit an interim report.
No final reports are required.
Organizations receiving one-time grants are not required to submit a report. We usually suggest organizations that re-apply for a grant to use a new application to describe how the last grant was helpful to the organization.
